BR 64 Design Phase for Scale Locomotive has been started
OpenRail64 – BR 64 our first scale locomotive for 3D printing
Based on the many positive feedbacks about our fictitious first steam locomotive Lok1, we are now taking the next step: We have started with the construction of a Class 64 locomotive (BR 64). Why a BR 64? 64 fits well with 64mm gauge and our name:-)

The BR 64 is a tender locomotive with a technically and structurally extremely interesting chassis. Which serial number will be implemented in concrete terms – or whether we will initially start with a neutral basic model – is currently still open. However, this decision has only a marginal impact on the design of the frame, wheelsets, electronics, software and drivetrain.
The locomotive adopts the proven control and drive concept of Lok1.
Objective and Benchmark
The aim is to create a model that is as true to scale and close to the original as possible on a scale of 1:22.5 with a track gauge of 64 mm. The functional demand is at least on the level of Lok1.
These include, but are not limited to:
- Speed-dependent controlled sound and steam
- Battery operation
- Lighting
- Integrated electronics and software
The design is carried out on the basis of different templates and drawings in a parametric 3D CAD system.
Design Concept
The model is deliberately designed for production in 3D printing. Based on our experience with the Lok1, we are convinced that a high-quality model can be realized for less than 200 euros – provided that a 3D printer is available (battery not included).
At the same time, we continue to develop our passenger and freight wagons. These will be gradually converted to our new ScaleRails with concrete or wooden sleepers.
Stay informed: At short intervals, we report on the progress of development in our blog.
